Alleges electric shocks in custody; police cite preventive detention, cases against youth

Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Badal on Saturday demanded action against police officials over the allegations of torture during the detention of Mohanjit Singh following a protest at Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s public meeting in Sheron village.

Visiting Singh at the Sangrur Civil Hospital, where he is undergoing treatment, Badal alleged that the youth was subjected to electric shocks and other forms of torture while in custody. He urged the CM to take action against the officials allegedly responsible.

The SAD chief further said Singh had merely exercised his right to protest by displaying a black flag during the CM’s gathering in the Sunam Assembly constituency. He alleged that the youth was subjected to inhuman treatment for raising his voice against the government.

Badal also warned that his party would take strict action against the officials if it returned to power. “When the SAD government comes to power, we will dismiss DSP Harwinder Singh Khaira,” Badal was quoted as saying.

Singh had allegedly climbed onto the roof of his house and displayed a black flag while the CM’s programme was underway. He was subsequently taken into custody from his house. After his release, he allegedly told his associates that he had been tortured and was later admitted to the civil hospital.

Several political leaders have visited the hospital to enquire about Singh’s condition.

Meanwhile, the police said Singh’s detention was preventive and intended to prevent any possible confrontation during the CM’s programme. Officials also said around eight cases under serious sections of law had previously been registered against him. Sangrur SSP Ravjot Grewal said an impartial inquiry had been assigned to the SP (Headquarters) and the medical records and statements would be examined.
