In a vibrant display of health and community spirit, the Sports Authority of India (SAI) National Center of Excellence (NCOE) in Dharamshala organized a mega cycle rally and multi-sport fitness event on Sunday to commemorate World Bicycle Day.

The event drew an enthusiastic turnout of around 150 participants, including athletes from the SAI hostel, students from local schools, youth fitness enthusiasts, and personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). Alongside the headline cycling rally, the event featured mass participation in yoga and skipping sessions, highlighting a holistic approach to physical well-being.

The event was graced by Dr. Lalita Sharma, Retired Deputy Director General of the Sports Authority of India, who attended as the chief guest. Joining her as special guests were Dr. Kushal Katoch and A.K. Dhiman. Upon arrival, the dignitaries were accorded a traditional welcome and honored with Himachali caps and shawls by JP Sahni, Assistant Director of NCOE Dharamshala, before Dr. Sharma officially flagged off the cycle rally.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Lalita Sharma emphasized the critical role of sports in character building, noting that engaging youth in regular physical activities is the most effective shield against the menace of drug abuse. She strongly advocated for infrastructure development in the region, specifically calling for the construction of a dedicated cycling track in Dharamshala.

“The youth of hilly regions possess immense natural potential,” Dr. Sharma stated. “With the right infrastructure and modern facilities, our children can easily compete and excel at both national and international levels.”

Echoing her sentiments, Assistant Director JP Sahni highlighted that the event was organized under the aegis of the Government of India’s ‘Fit India Campaign.’ He commended the NDRF team and local athletes for their energetic participation and reiterated the urgent need to upgrade basic sporting infrastructure to cultivate cycling talent in the state.

The day-long campaign successfully concluded with participants collectively pledging to adopt regular exercise, maintain a healthy lifestyle, and actively promote a drug-free society.
