Chandigarh, July 3
Senior Congress leader Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa has dismissed speculation of resentment within the party after his meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, saying he remains fully committed to his responsibilities as Congress General Secretary. Randhawa said his meeting with Amit Shah focused on the issue of law and order in Punjab and concerns over rising gangsterism in the state. His clarification comes amid growing political chatter over the timing of the meeting and its possible implications.
The development had triggered fresh speculation within political circles, especially as the Punjab Congress continues to witness internal unease over its leadership structure.
Tensions have been simmering within the party following the Congress high command’s decision to retain Amarinder Singh Raja Warring as Punjab Congress president under its latest “Punjab formula” ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. Before meeting Amit Shah, Randhawa was also seen interacting with Punjab BJP leaders, further fuelling political curiosity around his recent engagements.
Meanwhile, senior Congress leaders have been holding internal discussions at the residence of former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, where strategy and organisational changes are believed to be under review.
Several leaders are reportedly unhappy with the current leadership arrangement, which also keeps Pratap Singh Bajwa as Leader of the Opposition while introducing new organisational committees in an attempt to balance competing factions. Despite these changes, internal differences within the party remain visible, with limited public clarity from senior leadership since the reshuffle.
