The Election Commission of India on Friday announced that elections to 24 Rajya Sabha seats will be held on June 18 across 10 states, covering vacancies arising from the retirement of members between June 21 and July 19. The last date for filing nominations has been fixed as June 8.
According to the Election Commission, the biennial elections will cover multiple key states, including Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan. The polls are part of the regular cycle to fill seats in the Upper House of Parliament as sitting members complete their terms.
Four seats each will go to the polls in Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, and Karnataka. Elections will be held in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan for three seats each. Jharkhand will have two seats up for election, while one seat each will be contested in Manipur, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, and Mizoram.
The Commission stated that the electoral process will be completed in accordance with the retirement schedule of members from different states, with terms ending between June 21 and July 19. Nominations will remain open until June 8, after which scrutiny and further election procedures will follow as per the standard schedule.
The announcement sets the stage for upcoming political activity in the Upper House, with parties expected to finalise nominations and strategies in the coming days as the election date approaches.
