Punjab Governor and Chandigarh UT Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria on Saturday launched a mega tree plantation campaign at the CISF unit within the Punjab and Haryana Civil Secretariat complex in Chandigarh.

The initiative, part of the Van Mahotsav 2025 celebrations, marks the start of a citizen-led environmental movement aimed at enhancing urban greenery and sustainability. The campaign targets the planting of over one lakh saplings across 253 locations in Chandigarh, with around 300 saplings planted at the Secretariat premises on the first day.

The event was attended by key officials including UT Home Secretary Mandeep Singh Brar, Chief Conservator Saurabh Kumar, MC Commissioner Amit Kumar, and CISF Unit Commandant Lalit Pawar.

Governor Kataria urged members of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and other participants to take an active role in the campaign, stressing the importance of environmental stewardship and shared responsibility in combating climate change. “This drive will contribute meaningfully to Chandigarh’s efforts in sustainable urban development and reinforce its position as a green and progressive city,” Kataria said.

Officials said the broader aim of the initiative is to raise public awareness and encourage mass participation in environmental conservation.
