Punjab extends deadline to update digitised birth certificates: Harjot Bains

The Punjab government has extended the deadline for students to obtain and upload digitised birth certificates on the Unified Student Registration Portal, easing concerns that documentation delays could disrupt school registrations.

Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains said on Thursday that the extension was intended to ensure that no student is denied admission to the 2026-27 academic session because of delays in obtaining the required documents.

Under the revised schedule, Class 8 students who do not yet have a digitised birth certificate can obtain the document and upload it to the portal until 30 October 2026.

Students in Classes 9 and 10 have also been given additional time to correct and update their birth certificate details. They can complete the process before registrations begin for the next academic session.

Bains said the decision reflected the Punjab government’s efforts to modernise school administration while ensuring that students were not disadvantaged by procedural hurdles.

“Our government is committed to building a paperless, transparent and efficient education system through the Unified Student Registration Portal. At the same time, we recognise the practical challenges faced by students and parents. We will not allow procedural requirements to become a barrier to a child’s education,” he said.

The minister asked school heads to work closely with parents to ensure registrations are completed within the revised timelines.

The extension forms part of the Punjab government’s wider push to digitise education services while making the transition easier for students and their families.
