Chandigarh, June 1
The Punjab Cabinet on Monday approved amendments to the election department’s service rules to strengthen the election machinery and fill key vacancies ahead of the ongoing revision of electoral rolls and the upcoming Assembly elections.
The decision was taken during a Council of Ministers meeting chaired by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann in Chandigarh.
According to an official statement, the Cabinet approved reducing the experience required for promotion from the post of election kanungo to election tehsildar from 15 years to 12 years.
The amendment was introduced due to seven vacant posts of election tehsildar in the department. Officials said the move would help remove long pending administrative hurdles and ensure adequate manpower for election related work.
The statement said none of the serving election kanungos were eligible for promotion under the existing rules, which required 15 years of experience. By reducing the eligibility period to 12 years, the government aims to facilitate promotions and fill vacant posts in the near future.
The government said the services of election tehsildars are required immediately, in view of the ongoing revision of electoral rolls and preparations for future elections in the state.
The Cabinet also approved the annual administrative report of the Department of Water Resources for the financial years 2025 and 2026. The report is expected to help review the department’s functioning and document its achievements during the year.
