Jalandhar, July 6

Punjab BJP president Kewal Singh Dhillon on Sunday accused the Aam Aadmi Party government of failing to fulfill its promise of making the state drug-free. Addressing a press conference in Jalandhar, he alleged that drug abuse and trafficking had increased during the party’s tenure and claimed the government’s campaign against narcotics had failed to achieve its objectives.
Dhillon said AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal had assured voters ahead of the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections that the drug menace would be eradicated within three months. He alleged that the promise remains unfulfilled even after 4.5 years. Referring to the recent arrest of a deputy superintendent of Hoshiarpur Central Jail, Dhillon claimed the incident reflected the government’s inability to curb drug trafficking and prevent the use of mobile phones inside prisons. He also alleged that the state’s War Against Drugs campaign had not produced the desired results.
The BJP leader further alleged that Punjab continued to face challenges related to gangsterism, unemployment and law and order. Criticizing Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, he claimed the state lacked effective leadership. Dhillon also alleged that Punjab’s pace of development had slowed and claimed BJP-governed states had attracted more industries and improved governance. However, he did not cite any sources for the development rankings he cited. Targeting the AAP government’s welfare commitments, Dhillon alleged that women had not received the full ₹1,000 per month in financial assistance promised before the Assembly elections. He accused the government of misleading women voters.
He also criticized the Congress, alleging that the party remained preoccupied with internal disputes and leadership issues rather than addressing public concerns. Expressing confidence ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections, Dhillon said the BJP would form the next government in the state and work towards Punjab’s development in line with the vision of “Sarkar e Khalsa” associated with Maharaja Ranjit Singh. The AAP government has not responded to Dhillon’s allegations.
