New Delhi, May 29
Supreme Court has directed high courts across the country to pronounce judgements within three months of reserving orders, warning that delays can cause “irreparable loss” to litigants.
A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Baghchi on Friday issued a series of directions aimed at speeding up judicial decisions, particularly in cases involving personal liberty.
The Supreme Court said orders on bail applications should ideally be delivered on the same day. If a judgement is reserved, it must be pronounced and uploaded by the following day. The bench also directed that bail or sentence suspension orders should be communicated immediately to jail authorities after being pronounced.
It added that undertrials or convicts granted relief should preferably be released the same day, or at the latest by the next day.
