Panchkula college raises call against drug abuse among youth

Experts highlight psychological and social effects of addiction; students take pledge for drug-free society

A drug-free youth awareness programme was organised at Government Post Graduate College, Sector 1, Panchkula, on Friday under the Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan.

Senior yoga trainer from the AYUSH Department Pradeep Sharma attended the programme as the chief guest. He guided students through yoga and meditation and highlighted the importance of meditation, saying regular yoga and meditation could make a person physically and mentally stronger.

Sharma urged students to stay away from drugs and said, “If you have to get addicted, get addicted to patriotism, devotion to your mother and devotion to your father.” He said drugs could not solve any problem and students should remove the notion that drugs were a solution.

Encouraging students to stay away from drugs, college principal Dr Shailja Chhabra said drug addiction affected not only an individual’s personal life but also their family and society. She urged students to adopt a healthy lifestyle and contribute to building a drug-free society.

Meanwhile, keynote speaker Dr Sajjan Singh Nain spoke about the psychological and social problems caused by drug abuse. He also informed students about the role of psychological measures and therapy in overcoming drug addiction.

Sharing the details of the Nasha Mukt Yuva and Viksit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan, NSS Programme Officer Dr Anil Kumar Pandey said the campaign would continue at the college for three months, during which around 12 awareness programmes would be organised. Activities related to the harmful effects of drugs and de-addiction would be conducted every week, he added.

NSS Unit-2 Programme Officer Kriti Malik administered a pledge to students and NSS volunteers to stay away from drugs and encourage others to do the same. Meanwhile, students also participated in a signature campaign in support of the pledge for a drug-free India.
