The World Health Organization (WHO) has convened an emergency meeting to address the recent surge in monkeypox (Mpox) cases, particularly in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and neighboring countries. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced that independent experts will assess whether the outbreak poses a global public health emergency, as reported by the news outlet The Hindustan Times.
Since September, the DRC has reported over 27,000 Mpox cases and 1,100 deaths, with children being the most affected. The virus has spread to 10 African nations this year, with 96% of cases concentrated in Congo. The WHO had previously declared Mpox a global emergency in 2022 when it spread to more than 70 countries.
