Miri-Piri Khalsa march highlights drug abuse concerns

Sri Akal Takht Sahib Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj urges communities to unite against the growing drug menace and calls for the release of detained Sikh prisoners.

The Miri-Piri Khalsa March, which began at Takht Sri Damdama Sahib, proceeded from the historic Gurdwara Karhali Sahib towards Gurdwara Dukh Nivaran Sahib in Patiala, with thousands of devotees participating.

The march conveyed messages urging people to connect with the Sri Guru Granth Sahib, work towards the chardi kala of the Sikh community and extend assistance to those in need.

During the march, Sri Akal Takht Sahib Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj expressed concern over the growing drug menace in Punjab, particularly the spread of chitta, and appealed to people from all communities to unite against it.

He said the drug problem had reached villages across Punjab and stressed that society would have to come together to fight the menace decisively.

The march also carried a message encouraging families to educate both daughters and sons, remain in Punjab by considering it their home, stay connected with their roots and strengthen their relationship with the Guru.

The issue of the release of detained Sikh prisoners was also raised during the event. Referring to an ardas samagam held for their release, participants demanded the release of all detained Sikh prisoners, including Balwant Singh Rajoana. An appeal was made to the government to seriously consider the matter on humanitarian grounds.

Sri Akal Takht Sahib Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj said detained Sikh prisoners should be released and suggested that a major programme may have to be organised to press for their release.

The march, organised around the principles of Miri-Piri, saw participation from thousands of members of the Sikh congregation as it moved from Gurdwara Karhali Sahib towards Gurdwara Dukh Nivaran Sahib in Patiala.

“The drug problem has reached village after village, and society will have to fight it together decisively,” Sri Akal Takht Sahib Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj said.
