Chandigarh, November 4
Punjab Cabinet Minister Harbhajan Singh on Tuesday accused Punjab Congress President Amarinder Singh Raja Warring of displaying a “casteist and manuwadi mentality” through his derogatory comments against former Union Home Minister, the late Sardar Buta Singh. In a statement issued in Chandigarh, Harbhajan Singh said Warring’s remarks in a recent video, where he mocked the veteran leader as “Pathe Paun Wala”, were deeply disrespectful and revealed his prejudice towards Scheduled Castes. “The person Raja Warring mocked held B.A. (Honours), M.A., and Ph.D. degrees and had worked in several professional fields, before becoming a Member of Parliament at the age of 25,” the Minister said.
Harbhajan Singh said such colour-based comments violate the spirit of the Indian Constitution and reflect the Congress leader’s mindset towards Dalits.
“Responding to the allegations, Amarinder Singh Raja Warring on Monday expressed deep respect for the late Sardar Buta Singh, describing him as a father figure. “I meant no disrespect to him,” Warring said, adding, “If my words have caused any unintended hurt, I offer my sincerest and unconditional apology.”he said.
