Kullu, May 7

The nomination process for Panchayati Raj elections has begun in Kullu, with candidates reaching the SDM office to file their papers for the upcoming district council elections.

Former Zila Parishad member Premlata Thakur filed her nomination from the Mohal Zila Parishad ward, while Keshav Ram Kulvi submitted his nomination from the Jarad Bhutti ward.

The nomination process will continue over the coming days, after which scrutiny of the nomination papers will take place. The Election Commission has fixed May 15 as the last date for withdrawal of nominations. Candidates have now started completing the filing process in their respective constituencies.

Speaking to reporters, Premlata Thakur said she had earlier contested the Zila Parishad elections in 2010 and had then become the first woman in Himachal Pradesh to win the most votes. She said she is aware of the issues residents in the ward face and decided to contest again after consulting local villagers. Following her nomination, she has also started campaigning.

Meanwhile, Keshav Ram Kulvi said he filed his nomination papers at the SDM office along with his supporters. He said he has started visiting panchayats in the area to understand villagers’ concerns and would continue touring rural areas in the coming days to raise local issues with the administration.
