The Centre government has approved an expanded scope for the Gaganyaan Programme, now encompassing precursor missions for the Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS). The initiative includes the development and launch of the BAS’s first module (BAS-01), targeted for 2028, with full operationalisation expected by 2035.
Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, Dr. Jitendra Singh, shared the update in a written reply to the Lok Sabha, emphasizing the BAS’s role as an orbiting Indian human spaceflight platform in Low Earth Orbit (LEO). It will enable medium to long-duration missions, supporting India’s sustained human space programme.
The station will feature multiple modules and cutting-edge technology, designed to advance microgravity research and technology development aligned with national priorities and societal needs.
