Shimla, May 20
Even before voting begins in the Panchayati Raj Institutions elections in Himachal Pradesh, a significant number of candidates have already secured uncontested victories. According to the State Election Commission, a total of 10,854 representatives have been elected unopposed across various rural local bodies in the state.
The election process for Panchayati Raj Institutions began with the issuance of the notification on April 29, 2026. Nomination papers were filed on May 7, 8, and 11, while scrutiny took place on May 12 and 13. May 15 marked the final date for withdrawal of nominations, after which thousands of candidates were declared elected unopposed.
The uncontested winners include 85 Panchayat Samiti members, 176 Gram Panchayat Pradhans, 286 Up-Pradhans, and 10,307 ward members. In addition, 131 Gram Panchayats across the state were elected uncontested, reflecting a strong trend of consensus-based local governance in several rural areas.
District-wise data revealed that Shimla recorded the highest number of uncontested ward members. The district saw 51 Pradhans, 87 Up-Pradhans, and 1,687 ward members elected unopposed. Kangra followed closely with 1,657 ward members, along with 10 Pradhans and 27 Up-Pradhans securing uncontested victories.
In Mandi district, 17 Pradhans, 71 Up-Pradhans, and 1,296 ward members were elected unopposed. Sirmaur also witnessed a high number of uncontested results, with 32 Pradhans and 1,166 ward members declared winners without voting.
Other districts also reported substantial numbers of uncontested victories. Solan recorded 14 Pradhans, 18 Up-Pradhans, and 1,121 ward members elected unopposed, while Kullu saw 809 ward members winning without opposition. In Hamirpur, 22 Pradhans and 582 ward members were elected uncontested.
Officials believe the large number of unopposed elections will significantly reduce polling expenditure and ease the administrative burden on the election machinery. The State Election Commission stated that polling for the remaining seats will be conducted as scheduled on May 26, 28, and 30 across the state.
