Himachal Pradesh records 33 percent rainfall deficit in June, monsoon expected soon

Himachal Pradesh recorded a 33 percent rainfall deficit in June, receiving 63.8 mm of rain against the normal of 95.4 mm, according to data from the Shimla meteorological office.

The rainfall shortage was reported across most parts of the state, with 11 of the 12 districts recording deficits. Kinnaur was the only district to record excess rainfall, receiving 7 percent above normal levels.

Sirmaur recorded the highest rainfall deficit at 54 percent, followed by Lahaul-Spiti at 53 percent. Kullu reported a 45 percent deficit, while Mandi and Kangra recorded shortages of 41 percent and 35 percent respectively.

Other districts also witnessed below-normal rainfall, including Bilaspur with a 33 percent deficit, Chamba and Una with 28 percent each, Hamirpur with 27 percent, Solan with 17 percent and Shimla with a 6 percent shortfall.

According to the meteorological department, the conditions are favourable for the onset of monsoon in parts of Himachal Pradesh within the next three to four days.

Sandeep Sharma, a senior official at the Shimla meteorological office, said heavy and widespread rainfall is likely in parts of the state on July 2 and 3.

The normal rainfall during the monsoon season in Himachal Pradesh, from June to September, is 734.4 mm. However, officials said the overall rainfall during this monsoon season is expected to remain below normal, leading to fewer rainy days than average.
