Chandigarh, July 8

AICC general secretary in charge of Punjab, Bhupesh Baghel, on Wednesday said the Congress high command’s decision on the party’s leadership in the state is final, dismissing speculation about any change in the Punjab Congress leadership.

Responding to reports suggesting that the party could reconsider its decision to retain Amrinder Singh Raja Warring as Punjab Congress president, Baghel said such decisions are not altered repeatedly.

“When the high command has taken a decision, it is not changed. Is this ‘gudda guddi ka khel’ that the decision will be changed again and again?” he said.

The Congress recently announced that Raja Warring would continue as the Punjab unit chief. At the same time, former Punjab Chief Minister and Jalandhar MP Charanjit Singh Channi was appointed chairperson of the party’s campaign committee ahead of the Assembly elections due early next year.

Reports had suggested that Channi was unhappy after not being chosen for the top organisational post. Baghel, however, said he would soon meet Channi and senior Congress leader Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa.

“I talked to him. The meeting will take place. Randhawa will also come and meet me,” Baghel said.

Baghel is currently on a five-day visit to Punjab as the Congress prepares for the Assembly elections scheduled early next year.
