Hezbollah terror chief Hassan Nasrallah, who led the Iranian-backed group through decades of conflict with Israel, was killed in an airstrike in Beirut, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed. Born in the Shia suburbs of Beirut in 1960, the radical Lebanese cleric played a key role in transforming Hezbollah into a military power with significant regional influence, becoming one of the most prominent Arab figures in recent decades, an Israel-based news outlet The Times of Israel reported. A skilled strategist, Nasrallah turned Hezbollah into Israel’s sworn enemy while solidifying partnerships with Shiite leaders in Iran and Palestinian groups like Hamas.

Nasrallah became Hezbollah’s secretary general in 1992 at just 35 years old, becoming the public face of what was once a covert organization founded by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in 1982 to fight Israel. Iran used Hezbollah as its first means of spreading its political ideology across the region, the news outlet added.
