Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Wednesday thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Center after the Railway Ministry approved the operation of the country’s first hydrogen powered 10 coach DEMU train on the Jind Sonipat route under the Northern Railway zone.

Saini said the project would help Haryana achieve new milestones in rail infrastructure and development. According to an official statement, the train will run at a maximum speed of 75 kmph and use hydrogen fuel cell technology instead of conventional diesel or electric traction.

The chief minister said the approval marked a major step towards strengthening rail connectivity and promoting cleaner transportation technology in the state.

Officials said the train will have a total power output of 1,200 kilowatts and will operate on Distributed Power Rolling Stock technology, in which power is distributed across the coaches rather than concentrated in a single locomotive.

The Railway Ministry granted approval after technical clearance from the Research Designs and Standards Organization and safety testing by the Commissioner of Railway Safety.

The hydrogen powered train project is expected to boost sustainable transport infrastructure and support the Center’s push towards green energy based mobility solutions in the railway sector.
