Manali, May 14
The Darcha Sarchu road passing through the Baralacha La pass at an altitude of over 16,000 feet has been reopened for light motor vehicles in Himachal Pradesh’s Lahaul and Spiti district after joint efforts by the district administration and the Border Roads Organization. Deputy Commissioner and Chairperson of the District Disaster Management Authority, Kiran Bhadana, on Thursday said heavy vehicle movement on the route is expected to resume within the next three days if traffic movement remains smooth.
Despite heavy snowfall and adverse weather conditions, the administration and BRO’s 70 RCC unit restored the road on a war footing. Officials said rapid progress has also been made this year in reopening both the Baralacha and Shinkula passes, which are considered crucial routes for the region.
The district administration has directed the police department to ensure proper traffic management and monitoring across the route to maintain passenger safety and provide quick assistance during emergencies.
Officials said reopening the Darcha Sarchu route is expected to boost tourism activities in the tribal district. With the opening of the Manali-Leh highway, a large number of tourists travel through Lahaul towards Leh, benefiting hotels, homestays, dhabas, taxi operators, and other local businesses. The District Disaster Management Authority has advised tourists and motorists to check weather updates and daily advisories issued by the administration before starting their journey.
