Party says rising prices of sugar, onions, fuel and cooking gas are increasing the financial burden on households

Kullu, August 29

The Kullu district unit of the Congress staged a protest against rising prices of essential commodities, accusing the central government of failing to provide relief to people facing increasing household expenses.

During the demonstration, Congress workers raised slogans against the Centre over the rising prices of sugar, onions, cooking gas cylinders, petrol and diesel, expressing anger over what they described as the growing burden of inflation on the public.

Addressing the protesters, Kullu District Congress Committee president Ses Ram Azad said poor and middle-class families were being affected the most by rising prices.

He said the economic burden on people had increased across sectors, from household kitchens to businesses. According to Azad, the rising prices of sugar and other essential commodities, coupled with higher petrol and diesel prices, were directly affecting household budgets.

“Inflation is at its peak in the country, but instead of providing relief to the people, the government is keeping them entangled in political issues,” Azad said.

He said the Congress would continue to raise issues concerning the public “from the streets to the House” and maintain its campaign against inflation.

Azad also accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of having a “double character”, claiming that the government, which had promised “acche din” (good days), had instead made life difficult for ordinary citizens by allowing prices to rise.

He said people had now understood the government’s policies and growing economic pressures.

The Congress leader warned that if inflation was not brought under control, the party would intensify its agitation in the coming days.

The protest forms part of the Congress’ wider criticism of rising prices of essential commodities and its demand for measures to reduce the financial pressure on households.
