Dharamshala, April 28
K. C. Venugopal, National General Secretary of the Congress, on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party, describing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech in Bengali during the ongoing elections in West Bengal as “drama.”
Speaking informally to mediapersons at Kangra Airport while returning to Delhi, Venugopal said that key issues were discussed during the Public Accounts Committee meeting 2025–26 held in Dharamshala. He noted that deliberations included the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Airports Authority of India, and other stakeholders on the Regional Connectivity Scheme UDAN.
He further said discussions were held with the National Highways Authority of India regarding road infrastructure in Himachal Pradesh, along with detailed talks on boosting tourism in the state. Venugopal also confirmed interactions with Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and the party’s state in-charge.
Highlighting organizational matters, Venugopal said the Congress has introduced the “best model” in the country for selecting District Congress Committee (DCC) presidents. He stated that the process was carried out with the involvement of senior leaders and aimed to strengthen the party’s grassroots structure. A 10-day training camp will be organized for party leaders from Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Jammu and Kashmir to further reinforce the organization at the block and booth levels.
Taking a swipe at the Prime Minister, Venugopal alleged that such gestures, such as speaking in Bengali during election campaigns, are routine tactics employed by the BJP. He claimed that shortly after the speech, fuel prices were increased, adding that “drama” during elections has become a habit of the ruling party. He also accused the BJP of attempting to divide people across the country, including in West Bengal.
