Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Saturday clarified that his recent “parasites” remarks were directed only at individuals who use fake degrees to enter professions such as law and media, and not at the country’s youth.
In a statement issued after controversy over his oral observations during a court hearing on Friday, the Chief Justice said he was “pained” by media reports that suggested he had criticised India’s younger generation.
He explained that his comments were specifically aimed at people who allegedly secure entry into professional fields through “fake and bogus degrees.” He added that similar elements had also entered sectors such as the media and social media, which led to his remarks during the hearing.
Justice Kant rejected claims that he had made derogatory comments against the youth. He said India’s young people continue to inspire him and that they are the foundation of a developed nation.
The clarification came a day after the Chief Justice used strong words such as “parasites” and “cockroaches” while hearing a plea related to senior designation in the legal profession. The remarks had triggered criticism and widespread debate on social media and in sections of the media.
Reiterating his faith in the country’s youth, the Chief Justice said he has deep respect and admiration for India’s present and future generations.
