Centre Summons Netflix Content Head Over IC-814 Series Controversy

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has summoned the content head of OTT platform Netflix regarding the series ‘IC-814 — The Kandahar Hijack.’ The Ministry has taken a serious view of the series, as it has sparked controversy over the depiction of the hijackers of the Indian Airlines flight from Kathmandu to Delhi. A segment of viewers has raised objections to the allegedly ‘humane’ portrayal of the hijackers.

BJP IT Cell chief Amit Malviya, in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), expressed strong disapproval, stating that the IC-814 hijackers were dangerous terrorists who used aliases to conceal their Muslim identities. Malviya criticized filmmaker Anubhav Sinha for allegedly legitimizing the criminals by promoting their non-Muslim names. He warned that this portrayal could lead future generations to believe that Hindus were responsible for the IC-814 hijacking. Malviya accused the Left of attempting to whitewash the crimes of Pakistani terrorists, who were all Muslims, by manipulating the power of cinema. He further suggested that this portrayal could weaken India’s security apparatus and divert blame from the religious group responsible for the violence.
