The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the establishment of a Third Launch Pad (TLP) at ISRO’s Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota of Andhra Pradesh. The TLP will support Next Generation Launch Vehicles (NGLV) and serve as a backup for the Second Launch Pad (SLP), boosting India’s capacity for future human spaceflight and exploration missions. The project is expected to be completed within 48 months at a cost of ₹3,984.86 crore.
Designed to accommodate NGLV, LVM3, and advanced configurations, the launch pad will enhance India’s ability to undertake complex missions, including the Indian crewed lunar landing by 2040 and the Bharatiya Antariksh Station by 2035. This initiative addresses the need for heavier launch vehicles with advanced propulsion systems, vital for supporting India’s space ambitions over the next three decades.
