Former Himachal CM targets Congress over rising debt, stalled development and unfulfilled poll guarantees
Dharamshala: Former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister and Leader of the Opposition Jai Ram Thakur on Monday claimed that the BJP was gaining public support across the state ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections, expressing confidence that the party would return to power.
Addressing a felicitation ceremony in Shahpur for newly elected representatives of Panchayati Raj institutions and urban local bodies, Thakur claimed that the BJP had secured the presidents’ posts in 11 of the state’s 12 Zila Parishads and won three of the four municipal corporations. He said the results had boosted the morale of party workers and reflected support for the BJP across Himachal Pradesh, from Bharmour to Sirmaur.
Thakur congratulated the newly elected representatives and said several young candidates had also won the elections. He said they should be encouraged to take up public service. He added that the BJP had raised the issue of holding Panchayati Raj and urban local body elections before the Supreme Court and that the elected representatives deserved recognition.
Targeting Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, Thakur described him as “Lockpriya” and “Loanpriya”, alleging that development works had been stalled and the state’s debt had increased under the Congress government. He claimed that the debt had risen from around Rs 69,000 crore left by the previous BJP government to approximately Rs 1.20 lakh crore. He also alleged that the government was imposing various cesses and taxes without ensuring the expected pace of development.
Thakur said the BJP had begun preparations for the 2027 Assembly elections and claimed that he had visited around 25 constituencies, where he had witnessed enthusiasm among party workers and the public. He said the party would take its issues to voters in the run-up to the elections.
On whether young leaders would be given tickets, Thakur said the party would provide opportunities to youth. However, he clarified that the final decision on candidate selection would rest with the BJP’s central leadership and that ticket distribution should not be discussed on public platforms.
Responding to questions about Congress allegations of vote theft in Delhi, Thakur said the Election Commission had also conducted the Himachal Pradesh Assembly elections in which the Congress came to power. He also accused the state government of failing to fulfil its electoral guarantees and reiterated that the BJP was ready to contest the 2027 elections.
