Chandigarh, July 6

Punjab’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections witnessed fresh political assertions on Sunday as Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini said the Bharatiya Janata Party would contest the upcoming elections independently and expressed confidence that it would form the next government in the state.
Addressing reporters after a public meeting in Jalandhar, Saini said the BJP would not enter into any alliance for the Punjab Assembly elections, asserting that the party’s alliance was with the people of Punjab. He said the BJP was committed to building a strong and prosperous Punjab under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “Our tie-up is with the people of Punjab. The people of Punjab want the state to become strong and prosperous,” Saini said while ruling out any electoral alliance for the Assembly polls.
The Haryana chief minister also called on the Bhagwant Mann government to release a white paper detailing the status of the promises made before the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections. He alleged that the Aam Aadmi Party had failed to fulfill several commitments and accused the government of misleading voters. Claiming that Punjab continues to face challenges related to drug abuse, unemployment and farmers’ issues, Saini alleged that several promises made to youth and farmers remained unfulfilled. He also claimed that the people of Punjab now wanted a double engine government in the state.
Criticizing both the present AAP government and the previous Congress government, Saini alleged that both parties had made tall promises before elections but failed to deliver after assuming office. Responding to a question on the Punjab Congress, he also claimed that internal conflicts had become part of the party’s functioning. Earlier in the day, Saini attended a program in Pathankot organized to mark the 125th birth anniversary of Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder Syama Prasad Mookerjee.
Addressing the gathering, he alleged that many sections of society in Punjab were disappointed by unfulfilled promises on employment, farmers’ welfare, and financial assistance for women. Highlighting Haryana’s agricultural policies, he said the state procures all 24 crops at the Minimum Support Price, which he described as a reflection of the government’s commitment to farmers.
Saini also said the BJP was seeking an opportunity to serve the people of Punjab and expressed confidence that public support would help the party restore the state’s growth and prosperity while contributing to the vision of a developed India.
His remarks come days after the Punjab government launched the Mawan Dhiyan Satkar Yojna, under which women from the general category will receive monthly financial assistance of ₹1,000 while Scheduled Caste women will receive ₹1,500. Launching the scheme, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had said the initiative fulfilled the AAP government’s final poll promise made ahead of the 2022 Assembly elections. The 117-member Punjab Assembly is scheduled to go to the polls next year.
