Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin made history on Tuesday by becoming the first woman officer to assume the role of Director General, Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS). The DGAFMS oversees all medical policy matters for the Armed Forces and reports directly to the Ministry of Defence. Before her appointment as the 46th DGAFMS, Vice Admiral Sarin held key roles including DG Medical Services for both the Navy and Air Force, and Director of the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune.
An alumna of AFMC Pune, she was commissioned into the Armed Forces Medical Services in 1985. With an MD in Radiodiagnosis and specialized training in Gamma Knife Surgery, she has had an illustrious 38-year career. Vice Admiral Sarin has served in all three branches of the Indian Armed Forces, earning numerous commendations and awards, including the Ati Vishist Seva Medal in 2024.
She has also been appointed to the National Task Force by the Supreme Court to improve working conditions for medical professionals and is an advocate for empowering women in the Armed Forces under the Nari Shakti initiative.
