The Punjab government has requested an additional three days from the Supreme Court to comply with its directive to shift farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal to a hospital. The government informed the court that negotiations with protesting farmers were underway, and efforts were being made to facilitate Dallewal’s transfer.
The Supreme Court, after considering the state’s plea, deferred the matter to January 2 for compliance. Dallewal, whose hunger strike reached its 36th day on Tuesday, has steadfastly refused medical intervention despite repeated attempts by a team led by former Additional DGP Jaskaran Singh.
Earlier, on December 28, the Supreme Court issued a stern warning to the Punjab government for failing to ensure medical assistance for Dallewal. The court had directed the state to persuade the farmer leader to seek hospital treatment by December 31, warning of contempt charges against Chief Secretary K.A.P. Sinha and DGP Gaurav Yadav if its order was ignored.
