Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday honored the late former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, describing him as a kind-hearted individual, a scholarly economist, and a leader committed to reforms. “His dedication to the people and the nation’s development will forever be remembered. Dr. Manmohan Singh ji’s life reflected honesty and simplicity,” said the Prime Minister in a heartfelt tribute.

PM Modi expressed profound sorrow over Dr. Singh’s passing, calling it a significant loss for the nation. He noted that Dr. Singh’s journey from a refugee during India’s partition to a distinguished leader and economist is a remarkable testament to resilience and perseverance. “His life serves as an inspiration for future generations on overcoming adversity to achieve greatness,” Modi added.

As an economist, Dr. Singh played pivotal roles in shaping the country’s financial landscape, serving as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India and later as Finance Minister under Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao. His leadership during India’s economic reforms in the early 1990s is widely credited with steering the country out of a financial crisis.

Known for his humility and intellectual prowess, Dr. Singh was an extraordinary parliamentarian, always focused on the nation’s welfare. Modi recalled Dr. Singh’s unwavering dedication, even in challenging times, attending parliamentary sessions in a wheelchair to fulfill his duties.

Despite his global education and prestigious positions, Dr. Singh remained grounded and connected with people from all walks of life, transcending political divides. “I will always cherish our discussions and the wisdom he shared,” Modi said.

In closing, the Prime Minister extended his condolences to Dr. Singh’s family and paid tribute on behalf of the nation, recognizing his invaluable contributions to India’s development.
