Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday inaugurated the Ken-Betwa Link Project, describing it as a transformative step towards resolving Bundelkhand’s water crisis and fostering prosperity in the region.
Marking the 100th birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Modi also laid the foundation for the Daudhan Dam and Madhya Pradesh’s first floating solar project, emphasizing his government’s commitment to sustainable development and good governance.
“This project will bring prosperity and happiness to Bundelkhand, addressing decades of water scarcity,” Modi said, highlighting that the Ken-Betwa Link will benefit 10 districts in Madhya Pradesh and several in Uttar Pradesh, providing irrigation to over 11 lakh hectares.
The ₹45,000 crore initiative forms part of a larger vision to resolve India’s water disputes and ensure efficient use of river resources, with Madhya Pradesh leading the country in river-linking projects, Modi said.
Recalling Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s pioneering work in water management, Modi lamented the neglect of water projects by previous governments, underscoring the new momentum under his administration. He credited Vajpayee’s leadership for initiating the river-linking campaign, which is now being revitalized.
Modi also released a commemorative stamp and coin honoring Vajpayee, calling the day a “festival of good governance.” The Prime Minister praised technology-driven reforms like the PM-Kisan scheme, Jan Dhan accounts, and the “One Nation, One Ration Card” initiative, emphasizing transparency and efficiency in public service delivery.
The Daudhan Dam, a central feature of the Ken-Betwa Link, will include an extensive canal network and ensure water supply to drought-prone areas, Modi said. He stressed the importance of water security, declaring it essential for agriculture and industry.
“Water is key to development,” Modi stated, citing Gujarat’s success with the Narmada River as a model. He reaffirmed his commitment to improving living conditions for Bundelkhand’s farmers and women, fulfilling his promise to reduce their hardships.
The Prime Minister urged intellectuals to evaluate India’s progress in governance and development, asserting that his government’s dedication to the people sets it apart.
