A scuffle erupted in Parliament today, with BJP-led NDA and INDIA bloc accusing each other’s MPs of assault during protests related to Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks on Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. Three NDA MPs, including Anurag Thakur and Bansuri Swaraj, filed a police complaint against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, alleging physical assault and incitement during the altercation outside Makar Dwar. Thakur, addressing the media, confirmed that the complaint included charges under various sections, including attempt to murder and causing grievous harm.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to two BJP MPs, Pratap Sarangi and Mukesh Rajput, who were injured in the incident. Sarangi, 69, suffered a head injury and was admitted to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh stated both MPs were stable but would remain hospitalized for a few days.
BJP President JP Nadda condemned Gandhi’s actions as undemocratic and a violation of parliamentary privilege, accusing him of physically assaulting MPs. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju called for a nationwide apology from the Congress, emphasizing the need for decorum in Parliament.
Gandhi denied the allegations, claiming BJP MPs tried to block and push him while he was entering Parliament. He argued the incident was a result of BJP’s attacks on the Constitution and Dr. Ambedkar’s legacy.
Meanwhile, Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge accused BJP MPs of assaulting him as he arrived at Parliament. In a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Kharge called for an inquiry into the incident, which he said led to knee injuries from a previous surgery.
