New Delhi/Dhaka, December 9
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri arrived in Dhaka on Monday morning for the first high-level talks between India and Bangladesh since recent attacks on Hindus. Misri, accompanied by senior officials, landed at Dhaka airport aboard a special Indian Air Force flight around 9:00 a.m.
Misri and his Bangladeshi counterpart, Foreign Secretary Jashim Uddin, are set to lead the Foreign Office Consultation (FOC) at a state guest house. Later in the day, Misri will meet Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus at the State Guest House Jamuna before his scheduled departure later tonight.
The meeting takes on added significance following violent incidents targeting Hindu communities and temples in Bangladesh. A case has been filed against Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das and his followers after clashes last month in Chattogram. The police arrested several individuals on sedition charges following the incident. Chinmoy has already been arrested in the case and presently lodged in the jail.
The complaint, lodged by Hefazat-e-Islam activist Enamul Haque, names Das as the primary accused along with 164 identified individuals and as many as 500 unidentified persons, as reported by a Bangladeshi daily. Both nations are expected to address these sensitive issues while discussing broader bilateral cooperation during the consultations.
