Union Home Minister Amit Shah will confer the President’s Police Colour on the Chandigarh Police on Sunday, during his two-day visit to Chandigarh and Panchkula. He will also dedicate development projects worth Rs 262 crore and flag off 141 vehicles for induction into the police force.
The ceremony will be held at the Police Lines in Sector 26, Chandigarh, from 10.30 am to 12.45 pm, coinciding with the force’s 60th Raising Day. Shah will present the prestigious honour on behalf of President Droupadi Murmu. An officer of the Chandigarh Police will receive the colour, following which the Home Minister will address the gathering.
Shah is scheduled to arrive at Chandigarh’s technical airport at 8.25 pm on Saturday aboard an Indian Air Force aircraft from Delhi. He will proceed to the PWD Rest House in Sector 1, Panchkula, where he will stay overnight.
On Sunday, after the ceremony, Shah will visit Tiranga Park to dedicate projects and lay foundation stones for other development works. He is scheduled to depart for Delhi at 3.20 pm.
Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria said all arrangements for the event were complete. He described the President’s Police Color as the highest honor for a police force and said the recognition was particularly significant as Chandigarh marked the force’s 60th year.
Chandigarh Police Director General of Police Sagar Preet Hooda said the force was reorganised on November 1, 1968, with three police stations and 1,647 personnel responsible for around 30 sectors and 23 villages.
He said the force had earned one gallantry medal, 20 President’s Police Medals for Distinguished Service and 108 President’s Police Medals for Meritorious Service. It has also received 52 United Nations medals.
Hooda added that the Sector 25 parade ground had been upgraded for the ceremony. The President’s Police Colour was approved following a proposal from the UT Administration and an assessment by the Bureau of Police Research and Development under the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. The honour recognises the collective achievements and service record of a police force.
Meanwhile, the Chandigarh, Haryana and Punjab coordination authorities have issued a traffic advisory for October 31 and November 1 in view of security arrangements for Shah’s visit. Traffic restrictions and diversions will remain in force at several locations, particularly around Madhya Marg, Sector 17 and the Police Lines in Sector 26.
