Uttarakhand Minister Subodh Uniyal halts the singer’s performance at Kunjapuri Mela; viral video captures the onstage confrontation

Chandigarh: Punjabi singer Daler Mehndi’s performance at the Kunjapuri Mela in Uttarakhand’s Tehri Garhwal district took an unexpected turn after Cabinet Minister Subodh Uniyal interrupted the show during the Navratri celebrations.
A video of the confrontation, circulated on social media, shows the minister confronting the singer over his alleged conduct during the religious event, which was dedicated to Goddess Durga.
Expressing his displeasure, Uniyal reportedly objected to the performance, alleging that Mehndi had consumed alcohol and questioning whether he was in a condition to perform.
“This is a Durga Mata programme for Navratri, and you are singing at the event after drinking alcohol, which is not appropriate,” Uniyal reportedly said. He also questioned the singer’s ability to perform, remarking that he could barely speak.
Mehndi, meanwhile, appeared to respond with folded hands, requesting the minister to leave the stage. “Sir, I request you with folded hands… please leave the stage,” he reportedly said in the video.
The exchange soon became a talking point on social media, drawing attention to the confrontation between the politician and the Punjabi singer. The incident also sparked questions about the quality of the performance, with some audience members and local reports alleging that Mehndi was lip-syncing to recorded tracks rather than singing live.
However, the allegations of intoxication and lip-syncing remain unverified and should not be treated as established facts without independent confirmation.
The incident has also brought into focus the expectations surrounding artists performing at religious and cultural gatherings, where audiences may place particular emphasis on decorum and respect for the occasion.
As the video continues to draw attention online, the episode has shifted the spotlight away from the musical programme towards the confrontation between the minister and the singer, raising questions about performance standards and the responsibilities associated with public cultural events.
