She expresses confidence in the team’s talent, character and future.
Chandigarh:The captain of the Indian women’s cricket team on Tuesday announced her decision to step down from the leadership role across all formats, saying she believes the team is in a strong position and is ready to move forward.
In a statement, she described the decision as an emotional one, reflecting on years of memories, sacrifices and experiences during her tenure.
She said she has devoted everything she could to the team and Indian women’s cricket, at times setting aside her individual performance, personal growth and ambitions to prioritise the team’s interests.
As captain, she said, she had to make difficult decisions that were not always understood and sometimes came at a personal cost. However, she maintained that her intention had always been to strengthen the team and give other players opportunities to develop, build confidence and reach their potential.
Reflecting on her time in the role, she recalled both difficult periods marked by heartbreak, criticism and doubt, and memorable moments of victory, celebration and pride in representing the country.
Despite the emotions surrounding her decision, she said she was leaving the captaincy with peace of mind, expressing confidence in the team’s talent, character and future.
“I feel I have done my duty,” she said, adding that she has carried the responsibility with pride and would remain grateful for the opportunity to lead Indian women’s cricket.
She thanked her teammates, coaches, support staff, management, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), family members and fans for supporting her through the highs and lows.
The captain stressed that stepping down will not diminish her attachment to Indian cricket. She said she was ready to return her focus to playing for the love of the game.
“Captaincy ends. The journey continues,” she said.
