SUV later crashes into electricity pole; blood sample of driver collected after witnesses allege intoxication

Chandigarh, September 29

Two men were injured after a Mahindra Thar being driven by a woman allegedly rammed into their motorcycle in Dhanas here on Monday night before crashing into an electricity pole, while the driver continued ahead from the spot, the police said.

The two motorcycle riders were taken to Government Multi-Speciality Hospital, Sector 16, for treatment. Their condition was reported to be stable, according to information available after the incident.

The collision took place around 9 pm when the red Thar was reportedly travelling from the Dhanas side. According to the preliminary police account, the SUV hit the motorcycle from behind near Dhanas bridge, causing both riders to fall on the road.

People present in the area followed the vehicle, which later went onto a divider and crashed into an electricity pole.

Residents subsequently surrounded the vehicle and informed the police. A team from the Sarangpur police station reached the spot and took the Thar into custody. The police also took the woman driver for a medical examination at the Sector 16 hospital and collected a blood sample.

Some eyewitnesses alleged that the woman appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. The police have not confirmed the allegation, and the medical and blood-test reports are awaited. Officials said further action would depend on the investigation findings and the medical examination.
