From celebrity selfies to everyday posts, everyone is getting an AI-powered ’80s makeover
Chandigarh , September 10
Imagine opening your social media feed and finding your favourite celebrity looking like they have stepped straight out of an old 1980s photograph. That is exactly what the latest AI photo trend is doing, as users are turning their modern pictures into retro versions of themselves with just a simple prompt.
Bollywood celebrities are also embracing the craze. Kiara Advani recently shared her AI-generated 1980s look on social media, captioning it, “Back to the 80s.”
Parineeti Chopra joined the nostalgic wave ruling the air with an AI-generated photograph featuring her husband Raghav Chadha. She wrote, “80s babies, in the 80s baby!” and added a playful message about wishing they could have met when they were born.
Sonakshi Sinha too tried the trend, sharing her AI-generated 1980s appearance on Instagram. Her story read, “Lol, had to. TYPE INTO CHATGPT WHAT WOULD I HAVE LOOKED IN THE 80s.”
The trend has now moved well beyond celebrity posts. Millions of users are creating and sharing their own retro transformations, bringing back feathered hairstyles, vintage outfits, oversized silhouettes and acid-washed denims — at least on their screens.
The fascination is easy to understand. With a photograph and a short text prompt, users can ask an AI tool to place themselves in another decade and experiment with the fashion, hairstyles, and photography styles of the era.
For some, it is a playful trip down memory lane. For others, it is simply the fun of seeing a familiar face transformed into something completely different. Either way, the trend shows how quickly AI-generated images have become part of everyday social media culture.
But beneath the nostalgia and entertainment is a bigger technological story. Every seemingly instant AI image depends on large-scale computing infrastructure, data centres, and physical resources working behind the scenes.
One image may seem insignificant, but the picture changes when millions of people generate and share AI content every day. Generative AI is becoming a bigger part of online trends, and the conversation is slowly expanding beyond what the technology can create to how much infrastructure and resources it takes to keep those experiences running.
For now, though, social media is enjoying its digital trip back in time — one AI-generated 1980s photograph at a time.
