Dal Lake set for makeover ahead of Radhashtami

Beautification work at historic Dal Lake in Naddi is nearing completion, with a new ghat and chamber planned before Radhashtami.

The historic Dal Lake at Naddi in the tourist town of McLeodganj is set for a significant transformation ahead of Radhashtami, with its beautification work now in the final stage.

The project has been progressing for around two years, with efforts focused on addressing the long-standing problem of water leakage, removing silt and improving the appearance of the lake and its surroundings. A ghat is also being constructed along the lake, while a chamber is planned near the site where water is drained from the lake.

Rainfall had delayed the work, but officials and those involved in the project said the major works were now close to completion. The remaining beautification work is expected to be completed within the next eight to 10 days, ahead of Radhashtami.

The beautification work is being carried out through the BDO office, Dharamshala. Crates have also been installed at places along the lake where they were considered necessary. Desilting has been undertaken as part of efforts to address water leakage and improve water retention.

There is also a plan to channel water from an ancient stepwell located near the lake into Dal Lake.

Radhashtami draws thousands of devotees to Dal Lake for a ritual royal bath. After bathing in the lake, devotees offer prayers at the ancient Durveshwar Mahadev Temple situated along its banks. The state government is also planning to organise a Maha Aarti at the lake.

Local shopkeeper Badal said the lake had previously been in poor condition because of water leakage, which often disappointed tourists. He said the leakage problem had now been addressed and water had started staying in the lake.

Contractor Vineet Dhiman said the work had been delayed due to rainfall but was now “almost at the finishing stage”. He said the remaining work would be completed within eight to 10 days and the lake would be ready in its new form by Radhashtami.

Dhiman added that a chamber would be constructed at the lake’s water drainage point after the ghat work was completed. The beautification project is expected to provide improved facilities and a more attractive setting for devotees and tourists visiting during Radhashtami.
