Heavy August rainfall cuts monthly output estimate; July production rises by 1,000 kg year-on-year

Dharamshala , August 30

The Dharamshala tea industry has produced around 91,000 kg of tea so far this year, with the total output expected to reach nearly 1.5 lakh kg by November, despite production being affected by heavy rainfall in August.

Management expected to produce around 25,000 kg of tea in August, but excessive rainfall is likely to bring monthly output down to around 15,000–16,000 kg.

Dharamshala Tea Factory Production Manager Sujeet Rai said rainfall this year has been significantly higher than last year, affecting the tea leaves and subsequently reducing production.

“We had expected around 25,000 kg of tea production in August, but due to rainfall, only around 15,000–16,000 kg is likely to be produced,” Rai said, adding that production could improve in September if the weather remains favorable.

Management had earlier hoped annual production would cross 1.6 lakh kg, but the decline in August has lowered the estimate to around 1.5 lakh kg. Last year, the factory produced more than 1.37 lakh kg of tea.

Rai said the tea produced in April has already been sold, as prolonged storage can affect its market price. The factory plans to produce good-quality tea in October and export it.

Meanwhile, July production was higher than last year. The factory produced 23,000 kg of tea in July this year, compared to 22,000 kg in July last year.
