Chandigarh, July 27
An anonymous Instagram page with 4.9 million followers with Reservation Hatao Andolan, has rapidly gained attention online by calling for reforms to India’s caste-based reservation system. With no identified founder, political affiliation, or public leadership, the campaign describes itself as being “backed by citizens who believe reform deserves a voice” and uses the tagline, “Educate, Agitate, Organize.”
The campaign has sparked sharply divided reactions on social media. Supporters say the discussion should focus on promoting merit-based opportunities, while critics argue the initiative is simply a rebranded movement opposing reservation policies.
The page’s anonymous structure has drawn comparisons with previous social media campaigns that gained momentum without identifiable leadership. Similar online movements have previously evolved into larger public discussions, including campaigns linked to the NEET paper leak controversy.
It remains uncertain whether the campaign will remain confined to social media or influence wider public and policy discussions. However, it has reignited debate around one of India’s most contentious socio-political issues in the digital space.
