Chandigarh, July 9

The Punjab Government’s Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana has provided cashless medical treatment to more than 2.42 lakh patients during its first six months, with 4.79 lakh treatments worth nearly Rs 852 crore delivered under the scheme. More than 47 lakh Sehat Cards have been registered since the scheme was launched on January 8, expanding access to affordable healthcare across the state. The flagship health scheme offers eligible families annual cashless treatment of up to Rs 10 lakh and aims to strengthen universal health coverage in Punjab.
Punjab Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. Balbir Singh said the initiative has enabled thousands of families to access quality healthcare without financial hardship. He said the response to the scheme, reflected in over 47 lakh registrations and cashless treatment worth Rs 852 crore, demonstrates the confidence people have placed in the government’s healthcare initiative. Sharing details of the treatment pattern, the minister said chronic hemodialysis emerged as the most frequently availed service, with more than 1.58 lakh dialysis sessions conducted under the scheme. Other commonly availed procedures included laparoscopic gallbladder surgery, knee replacement, Cesarean deliveries, normal deliveries, hysterectomy, hip replacement and general laparotomy.
Dr. Balbir Singh said primary knee replacement surgeries accounted for the highest expenditure under the scheme, followed by cardiac stent procedures with diagnostic angiograms. Hip replacement, spinal surgeries, coronary artery bypass grafting, cataract surgeries, bilateral hernia repair and hysterectomy also featured among the major procedures covered. He said the scheme provides free treatment for routine healthcare as well as costly specialized procedures, including cardiac, orthopedic and spinal surgeries, ensuring quality medical care reaches every eligible household.
Several beneficiaries also shared their experiences. Baljinder Kaur from Sangrur said free knee replacement surgery relieved her of nearly a decade of chronic pain. Mamu Ram from Patiala said the cashless treatment reduced the financial burden on his family. Beneficiaries from Ludhiana, Patiala and Fazilka also said the scheme enabled them to receive timely treatment without worrying about medical expenses.
The Health Minister said the Punjab Government will continue to expand the network of impaneled hospitals, increase public awareness, and simplify the registration process so that every eligible family can benefit from the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana.
