Dharamhara, July 8

The Kangra district administration has introduced special safety measures on 10 major trekking routes during the monsoon season, making registration mandatory for all trekkers before they are allowed to proceed.

Deputy Commissioner Hemraj Bairwa said the administration will establish check posts along the identified trekking routes, with support from disaster management teams, volunteers, and institutions, to ensure the safety of visitors during adverse weather conditions.

Speaking to reporters, Bairwa said every trekker will be registered at the check posts so that immediate assistance can be provided in case of bad weather or any emergency. He added that the system, first introduced last year, had almost eliminated cases of trekkers losing their way and significantly reduced rescue calls.

He said trekkers would be prevented from continuing their journey if there was a likelihood of deteriorating weather conditions during the trek. He emphasised that the administration’s objective is not to stop trekking activities entirely but to ensure they are conducted in a safe and organised manner.

According to the Deputy Commissioner, all check posts will operate daily from 5 am to 5 pm. The arrangement will remain in force until September and may be extended if required.

Bairwa clarified that imposing a complete ban on trekking during the monsoon is impractical because several religious sites in the district are in high-altitude areas that attract pilgrims. He said the administration will therefore regulate trekking and pilgrimage activities while prioritizing public safety.
