Chandigarh, July 7
The Punjab Government has announced the establishment of a state-of-the-art Government-owned and managed Senior Citizens’ Home in SAS Nagar (Mohali), reinforcing its commitment to ensuring a secure, dignified and compassionate life for elderly citizens.
The Department of Social Security, Women and Child Development will develop the facility after the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) allotted 2.92 acres of land in Sector 78. The project is expected to begin shortly after the formal handover of the site.
Announcing the initiative, Punjab Minister for Social Security, Women and Child Development Dr Baljit Kaur on Tuesday said that the project reflects Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann’s commitment to placing the welfare and dignity of senior citizens at the forefront of the Government’s agenda.
“Our elderly are our invaluable asset and guiding light. At this stage of life, caring for them is the foremost duty of the government,” the Minister said.
Dr Baljit Kaur said the Government aims to create more than just a physical structure by providing a safe and supportive environment for destitute and abandoned senior citizens.
“Our government is not merely constructing buildings of brick and mortar; we are creating a ‘safe home’ where destitute and abandoned senior citizens can find a sense of belonging, respect and family-like warmth,” she said.
She added that Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann is determined to ensure that no older adult in Punjab faces loneliness or helplessness in their later years. The proposed Senior Citizens’ Home, she said, will serve as a dependable support system for those in need.
To expedite the project, the Department has written to the Estate Officer (Plots), GMADA, PUDA Bhawan, Mohali, requesting that all formalities be completed for the handover of physical possession of the allotted land to the District Social Security Officer, Mohali.
According to the Minister, once possession of the site is transferred, construction work on the Senior Citizens’ Home will commence without delay.
