Kullu sees first monsoon relief as rain benefits agriculture and horticulture

The arrival of the monsoon in Kullu district has brought welcome relief to residents, with rainfall easing the intense heat experienced over recent days and offering significant benefits to agriculture and horticulture across the valley.

Rainfall on Monday morning briefly disrupted rural link roads in some areas. However, the Public Works Department restored connectivity by the afternoon.

Farmers and orchardists expressed optimism after the showers, saying the rainfall would significantly benefit standing crops and apple and Japanese fruit orchards.

Orchardist Jayaram Thakur said the rain had come as a lifeline for maize cultivation. He added that farmers had also sown crops such as cabbage, tomatoes, capsicum and brinjal, which were nearing maturity. According to him, the prolonged heat had pushed these crops close to drying out, but the rainfall is now expected to improve their condition considerably.

Local resident Prem Kumar said the valley had not received adequate rainfall for a long time. He said the early monsoon showers would also benefit apple and Japanese fruit crops by increasing soil moisture and helping improve fruit size.

Another resident, Karan, said temperatures in the valley had risen sharply in recent days, causing discomfort. He said the rainfall had significantly lowered temperatures and would benefit crops, strengthening the livelihoods of farmers, orchardists and the wider local community.
