Heavy overnight rain lashed several parts of Himachal Pradesh on Monday, triggering flash floods that blocked important roads in Chamba and Kullu districts. The spell of rain also claimed the life of a 14-year-old girl after a shooting stone struck the vehicle she was travelling in on the Dhagod Banni road. The victim, identified as Dikshita, a resident of Dharamshala in Kangra district, was travelling with four others when the incident occurred. The group was returning from the Banni Mata Temple when a shooting stone hit their moving vehicle. She died on the spot, according to police.

The intense rainfall disrupted road connectivity in multiple areas. The Chamba Tissa road was blocked after flash floods at Pangola Nala in Churah subdivision, while traffic on the Larji Sainj road in Kullu district was affected by flooding at Pagal Nala.Floodwaters also caused damage in Rampur subdivision of Shimla district. The Barandli village playground and the road leading to it were washed away after the Barandli ravine overflowed. A footbridge linking Pelan village with the Kurnu ravine was submerged, creating difficulties for local residents.

Annu Pond, head of the Naren Gram Panchayat, said floodwaters had also partially damaged several farmers’ fields in the area.

In Shimla city, continuous rain led to the collapse of a retaining wall near the Ridge ground.

Authorities at the Parbati Power Station III in Kullu district announced that around 50 cumecs of additional water would be released into the Sainj River due to rising reservoir levels and the possibility of further heavy inflows.

Jogindernagar in Mandi district recorded the highest rainfall at 97 mm, followed by Kangra with 81 mm. Other areas receiving significant rainfall included Palampur at 35.4 mm, Bharwain at 34 mm, Sarahan at 32.5 mm, Dharamshala at 31.4 mm, Sundernagar at 31.2 mm, Rohru at 30 mm and Shimla at 17 mm.

The India Meteorological Department said isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over Kangra, Una and Sirmaur districts, while Chamba, Mandi and Shimla may also receive heavy rain. An orange warning has been issued for Kangra, Mandi, Shimla and Solan districts for Tuesday.

The widespread rainfall also brought a noticeable drop in temperatures across the state. Neri recorded the highest daytime temperature at 32.6 degrees Celsius, while Kukumseri remained the coldest during the night at 11.1 degrees Celsius.
