Sunehri Yaadein marks Kishore Kumar’s 97th anniversary

The 10th edition of the musical programme turned Chandigarh’s Tagore Theatre into an evening of nostalgia, memories and timeless melodies.

Some songs do more than entertain. They bring back a time, a place or a person one thought had been forgotten. At Chandigarh’s Tagore Theatre, Kishore Kumar’s voice once again became a bridge to those memories as Sunehri Yaadein 2026 brought together music lovers for an evening dedicated to the legendary singer.

Organised by the Tricity Cultural Association (TCA), the 10th edition of the annual musical programme was held on August 23 to mark Kishore Kumar’s 97th birth anniversary. The packed theatre came alive with 46 singers and 14 musicians recreating some of his most loved melodies.

As familiar tunes filled the auditorium, the evening was not simply about performances. It was about remembrance. The audience sang along, applauded and revisited the emotions attached to songs that have remained part of generations of Hindi film music.

The programme also carried a special tribute to another legendary voice of Indian music. The Ladies Wing of the Tricity Cultural Association paid tribute to Asha Bhosle, recognising her contribution to Indian music.

The event was attended by Chief Guest Satya Pal Jain, Additional Solicitor General of India, Punjab and Haryana High Court, along with several distinguished guests, including Gajendra Kumar Negi, Chairman, Punjab Gramin Bank; Col Deepak De, SM (Retd), Convenor, Social Welfare, Chandigarh Citizens Foundation; Sonam Chhewang, Senior Divisional Manager, LIC of India; Suraj Kumar Tiwary, Chief Manager and Cluster Head, Karnataka Bank; Sushmit Banerjee, Field General Manager, Indian Bank; Ashish Singla, Owner of Multistar Brand, Hindustan Engineering Company; M K Sinha, General Manager-Lubes, Indian Oil Corporation Limited; and Dr Sukhminder Kaur Brar, Chairperson, Chandigarh Sangeet Natak Akademi.

The musical journey moved through songs including “Mere Deewanepan Ki Bhi Dawa Nahin”, “Janeja Dhundta Phir Raha”, “Tera Ishq Hai Meri Zindagi”, “Yeh Kori Karari Kanwari Nazar”, “Dariya Kinare Ek Bangla”, “Peene Walo Peene Ka Bahana Chahiye” and “Bhool Gaya Sab Kuch”.

Behind the performances were Music Arranger Dr Arun Kant and Sound Engineer Kumar Bittu, whose artistic and technical support helped shape the evening.

For TCA, the programme was also a celebration of the bond between music and memory. Its theme, “His Voice… Our Memories… Timeless Forever…”, captured the mood of an evening where Kishore Kumar’s songs allowed the audience to pause, remember and reconnect with a musical era that continues to live on.

The association thanked the guests, artists, musicians, volunteers and audience members for their support and said it would continue its efforts to promote music, culture and the performing arts through the universal language of music.
