New Delhi, July 2
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi held summit talks in New Delhi on Thursday, with a strong focus on expanding economic cooperation, strengthening semiconductor supply chains and deepening collaboration in emerging technologies.
The meeting reflected the growing strategic partnership between India and Japan as both countries seek to reduce vulnerabilities in global supply chains and work more closely on critical industries.
After the talks, the two governments were expected to issue a joint declaration on economic security cooperation and a separate joint statement outlining plans to work together on artificial intelligence.
Sharing an update, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the discussions aimed to take forward a partnership “anchored in trust, shared values and strategic convergence.”
Officials said the leaders also discussed ways to increase cooperation in critical minerals and pharmaceuticals, sectors regarded as increasingly important for economic resilience and future manufacturing.
Takaichi is on a three-day visit to India, highlighting Tokyo’s continued engagement with New Delhi at a time of shifting geopolitical and economic priorities in the Indo-Pacific region.
India and Japan have steadily expanded their relationship over the past decade. In 2014, the two countries elevated their ties to a Special Strategic and Global Partnership, broadening cooperation across trade, investment, defence, science and technology, economic security, culture and people-to-people exchanges.
The two nations will mark 75 years of diplomatic relations in 2027. Their partnership now includes more than 70 dialogue mechanisms covering a wide range of sectors.
Modi last visited Japan for the annual India-Japan Summit in Tokyo in August 2025. The summit remains the main platform for setting the direction of the two countries’ long-term strategic partnership.
