Patiala, June 4
Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh on Thursday inaugurated several development projects in the Patiala rural belt, focusing on improving infrastructure in flood-affected areas and expanding the Punjab government’s public welfare schemes.
Addressing mediapersons during the inauguration, Dr. Singh said several localities in Patiala rural had long struggled with waterlogging during the rainy season. He added that new development works, including the laying of sewerage systems, have now been initiated to address the issue and improve drainage infrastructure in the region.
The minister also highlighted the Punjab government’s “Farishtey Scheme,” under which citizens who help accident victims reach hospitals are being recognized and supported. He said that in several cases, bystanders who assist injured persons often bear informal costs, and the government intends to encourage such humanitarian efforts. Under the scheme, individuals who help accident victims will receive ₹2,000 in assistance and will also be honored with certificates on January 26.
On political developments, Dr. Singh criticized senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia, stating that individuals who have served as MLAs or ministers are expected to maintain decorum. He added that recent actions attributed to Majithia were unacceptable and asserted that legal proceedings are underway.
Referring to a recent Chandigarh media report on health concerns among mothers and children, the minister said the state government is taking steps to address nutritional deficiencies. He stated that ₹1,000 per month will be credited to women’s bank accounts to enable them to purchase nutritious food independently. He further noted that the government is also providing nutritional support through ration schemes.
Dr. Singh expressed confidence that such health-related challenges would be effectively addressed through ongoing welfare initiatives and assured the state’s commitment to improving maternal and child health outcomes.
